Invite a Science Speaker to your School!
Prof. Kevin McGuigan
On Thursday 2 November, Kevin McGuigan from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) came to give a talk to 6th Class on the Purification of drinking water in third world countries using solar power. It was very interesting!
2. Participate in Science events or projects
Cell Explorers: DNA in a Box
Funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Fantastic DNA in a box is a classroom kit, complete with both materials and resources, that allows pupils/students in the class to extract DNA from a banana individually. Ms Walsh in 4th Class ran this activity herself in her classroom, guided by downloadable resources.
3. Pupils used STEM skills in projects on Environment or Sustainability
Senior Infants and 5th Class used their STEM skills in the garden.
Firstly we had to use our Maths skills to sort and classify the seeds and bulbs for planting.
Next we had to use technology to research the correct way to plant onions, rhubarb, broad beans and winter garlic.
Then we in 5th Class used a metre stick, chalk and string to mark out the correct spacing.
Finally Senior Infants planted their onions.
They also used Technology to take photographs as their onions grewsand make a short video on Seesaw about their gardening efforts.
