Salt Crystals Investigation
Equipment:
The water evaporated and the salt crystals were left behind.
- Clear plastic cup
- Pipe cleaners
- Salt
- pencil
- Pour warm water into a plastic cup.
- Add salt to the cup.
- Stir until no more salt will dissolve.
- Lower the pipe cleaner into the cup.
- Place the cup on the windowsill for a few days.
The water evaporated and the salt crystals were left behind.

* Spinner template
* Scissors
* Blu tac
* Timer/ stopwatch
* iPhone
What I did
1. Each child makes a large and small paper spinner.
2. Use the investigation planning sheet to predict which will fall to the ground first and give reasons to support predictions.
3. Stand on a chair and drop the spinners at the same time.
4. Start the timer and record using slo-mo function
Results
The bigger spinner took longer to fall (3.5 seconds) and the smaller one fell faster (2.5 seconds)
How Plants Drink Water
Equipment:
The celery stalk with the food colouring started to change colour.
There was no change in the one left in water.
- 2 x 2l milk cartons
- 2 celery stalks
- Water
- Food colouring
- Droppers
- Half-fill each milk carton with water.
- Add food colouring to one of the milk cartons.
- Place a celery stalk into each of the glasses.
- Leave the glasses for a day or two in the sunlight.
The celery stalk with the food colouring started to change colour.
There was no change in the one left in water.
